An Overview of the Dry Rot Repair Process
Chris Childers leverages decades of experience in the construction and renovation industry to inform his role as president and owner of Allstate Renovations in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition to serving as the primary customer contact at Allstate Renovations, Chris Childers also oversees administrative and operations functions.
Allstate Renovations provides an array of housing renovation and repair services that range from residing and window replacement to painting and dry rot repair. Also known as brown rot, dry rot refers to wood decay when fungi take advantage of wet conditions to break down two components that give strength to wood; cellulose and hemicellulose. Any wood with 20 percent or greater moisture content can be affected.
The first step to repairing dry rot is to remove all affected wood. This usually involves digging into the wood and scraping away any loosened material until only healthy wood remains. Fungicide is then sprayed on the area to destroy any fungus spores and prevent future spread before a wood hardener is applied. Following these treatments, epoxy is used to replace the damaged wood that was removed. Lastly, the surface can be sanded smooth before applying a primer and paint for increased protection.
